If you really take care of yourself, you can take care of everything else.
What is wellbeing?
Wellbeing is when things in our life are in balance. Stress is when our life is out of balance. Women in particular over care for others & spot other people’s needs, but are poor at spotting their own needs. Do you take responsibility for everything? Do you put yourself last? Then this article is for you!
Balance in Life
If you over care for other you end up under caring for self. Recognize where it came from; maybe when you were young you got recognition for that, so you find it hard to ask for support or help. When someone offers help, you may find it hard to accept – instead accept graciously. Accept the compliment, try not to hand it back, seek support when overloaded or overwhelmed, you work hard, you need and deserve a little help and support.
Physically
Finding the half hour to exercise makes the rest of the day more manageable. ‘When I exercise, things don’t get on top of me’
- Nurture Self by being aware of food & alcohol consumption
- Get Fit & Healthy – take time to walk or gym to destress
- Drink in responsible ways
- Prioritise rest when tired
Emotional Wellness
Becoming more aware of how you feel, means you can respond in the way that you need. Many of us are not in touch with how we feel and we are reactive as a result. Suppression of feelings can lead to depression, so it’s simply healthier to express how you feel – as you feel it.
Look at Your Own Behaviour
- Do you build yourself up with encouragement or do you criticise self?
- Do you affirm self for a job well done or criticise self that it could be better?
- Do you accept the compliment/gift or feel undeserving?
Work and Life Balance-Is work your worth?
Work becomes a way of being visible if you did not feel loved for self. Our deepest need is to be loved for ourselves and not for what we do. If balancing work/home life is an issue and relationships are suffering, there is a deeper issue ‘How is it you are not looking after yourself?’. You being busy to partner or children, makes you unavailable to those you love. It also impacts on the child’s self-worth as when you don’t make time for them, they feel unworthy and lack security and do not value themselves.
Employee Wellness Programs- Set healthy boundaries
Connectivity through technology creates problems so we need boundaries around the times we are not available. When is the mobile off? Has the exception become the rule?
