Coping with Stress
Remember a certain level of stress is good for us like when we are facing a challenge. Too much stress affects our wellbeing however and stress is like a friend sounding an alarm that you need to move back to balance away pull back from stress. Managing workload at the office or setting boundaries around having some time for yourself all help. There are several simple effective methods to use to cut down and overcome stress and in the majority of cases, these solutions succeed.
Obvious Stress factors
- Reduce caffeine to 1/2 cups of coffee/tea a day
- Stop or reduce smoking
- Drink alcohol in moderation (weekly upper limit 2.5 bottles of wine for a man or or 1.5 for a woman, or 8 pints for a man or 11 spirits for a woman, these are standard measures
- Finding a half hour to walk makes the rest of the day more manageable, exercise is essential
- Significant event ie death, divorce, job loss, moving house, illness, money problems
Reducing Stress
- Do not catastrophise, keep perspective
- Talk worries out with family or friends
- Deal with it early, ignoring a problem makes it worse eventually
- Walk it out – exercise is the No 1 way to ‘ feel on top of things’
- Take time to see ‘spark’ friends, from whom you leave feeling good
- Reduce screen time
- Get 8 hours sleep, go to bed physically tired if sleep difficult
- Use guided free meditations to help relax or to aid sleep (available on the internet)
- Reward yourself for a task done
- Treat yourself from time to time
- Change your thinking, change your life to more positive assuring thoughts
- Take action and tackle the problem
- Ask for help and learn to say no nicely
- Take breaks and lunch to recharge
- Take Time Out – just for you! It recharges you.
- In the moment of stress – stop and focus on the breath coming in and going out and say ‘Slow Down & Let It Go

- There are things I have to DO
- There are things I need to DELEGATE
- There are things I may need to DUMP
- There is something I can DUMP
